Two pubs of note to Elder Dempster Lines personnel were the imposing Langton Castle on the north docks road, close to the Brocklebank Dock, and the Seven Steps (the Brunswick Hotel) on the south docks road, close to the Brunswick Dock.

Elder Dempster used the Brocklebank Dock in the north docks, and in the south docks the Brunswick Dock, the Toxteth Dock and Harrington Dock (with the ED Dock Office between the latter two). The mailboats were based in the Brocklebank Dock and the cargo ships used the south docks.

When some other familiar places in Liverpool were visited in early 2011 the Langton Castle was still there (although boarded up) and the Seven Steps an office building, but the Baltic Fleet was going strong as was the Carnarvon Castle (with a new frontage).

Since 2011 the Langton Castle was demolished and an office block built on the site. The Seven Steps has been refurbished and is still in use as offices.
