West Africa - Location of the Creeks
The ports of Burutu, Warri, and Sapele are located many miles from the sea,
in the Niger Delta region, and passage up and down the Creeks required ship handling of the highest order.
These ports were very different from the wharves and cranes of
Lagos/Apapa to the west and Port Harcourt to the east, each ship depended on its own derricks and the skills of its crew, the winchmen and logging gangs. With so many years experience in West Africa the cargo ships of Elder Dempster were specially designed to operate in the Creeks. Amongst the many calculations taken into account was a close monitoring of fuel and water loads, keeping these to a minimum to ensure maximum cargo loads.
