Elder
Dempster
Lines
a new K-boat
A former Elder Dempster Purser has constructed a 1:72 scale radio-controlled model of the Kandaw. He is a member of the Task Force 72 Scale Model Ship Association in Australia, whose models are all built to that scale and when together are all in proportion to each other.
The original Kandaw - shown below on the ways at the Lithgows yard in 1954 - was some 455 feet in length, and the new Kandaw is 76 inches (193 cm) in length.
Photographs of the build will be shown in detail initially, and as the project progresses some of the earlier images may gradually be removed so as to show a smoother progression of the creation and operation of the new Kandaw.

a message from the builder I am starting this model with something of a handicap as so far I have been unable to locate any drawings of a K-boat. I have progressed so far by modifying an existing drawing of a similar sized vessel from another company and, using existing photographs, have produced I think a reasonable likeness. I sailed on the Kandaw from June 1962 to July 1963 as Writer in Charge and have a number of my own photos plus the images on the ED website as references. The more reference points and details I can get to, the better. With this in mind, I wonder if any of you out there have any photos, drawings, or other references relating to K-boats that may be of assistance in my build. I would appreciate if you could communicate with me, perhaps by email. Any out of pocket expense will be taken care of. Thanking you in anticipation.
apologies for this being an image rather than a link |
and some larger K-boats for comparison
